Statistically, you are more likely to run into that kind of trouble by walking down the street of Boston than you are by walking down a two foot wide path in the middle of the woods. True, there are bears in the woods, but they are more like large raccoons that just want to steal your food bag. They are more afraid of us than we are of them.
First starting out it seems like gear is the go-to topic for most hikers preparing for an Appalachian Trail thru hike. Everything one could possibly need has to fit into a backpack, and careful thought has to be taken into every item that goes into that pack. It doesn't help that manufacturers are constantly coming out with new technologies for lighter and stronger products. Leaving the consumer in a constant state of research, comparing weight, cost, and comfort. No matter how many reviews you may read or YouTube "AT Gear List" videos you may watch; ultimately, it comes down to what best works for you.
